Steps for Successful In-person Lobbying

1. Determine several windows in your schedule when you can meet with your representative.

2. Call your representative’s office and tell the receptionist:

    1. Your name
    2. Your role in the community (e.g., health care professional, parent)
    3. That you are a constituent of the legislator
    4. That you would like to meet with your representative to discuss the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2009

3. If your representative is unavailable, you may have to leave a voice mail or send an e-mail. Confirm the spelling of your representative’s name and e-mail address. (Most addresses follow this format: firstname.lastname@mail.house.gov.)

4. When you speak (or leave a voice mail) with your representative, repeat what you told the receptionist. Explain that you would like to meet to discuss the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2009. Ask if your representative is available to meet with you. Suggest a range of dates and times.

5. If you have to leave voice mail, follow up with an e-mail.

6. Follow up to coordinate and confirm a meeting date.

7. When you meet, dress appropriately and bring materials to support your message. Bring a brief document that states your recommendations for the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2009.
